Warriors romp in opener

Waubonsie Valley wasted little time showing Plainfield who the higher seed was and who would advance in the sectional Thursday night in Aurora.
Senior Melissa Strohmaier scored twice in the first 10 minutes to start the No. 6 seed Warriors on their way to an 8-0 romp of No. 11 seed Plainfield in the opening round of the Waubonsie Valley sectional complex.

After Strohmaier's early goals, the outcome was never in doubt as Waubonsie Valley (11-11) dominated play. The Warriors likely will play No. 3 Downers Grove South next week if the Mustangs win their opening game Saturday. A victory in the quarterfinal could advance the Warriors into an intriguing sectional semifinal against sister-school and No. 2 seed Neuqua Valley.

"We had been working on that," said Strohmaier of the early offensive thrust. "I know what to do."

The Warriors kept the pressure on after the early goals. Junior Kristen Zmijewski, or "Kristen Z" as the public address announcer repeatedly said, scored the third goal with 18:22 left in the first half.

Waubonsie Valley went into halftime with a 3-0 lead, then quickly put the game out of reach in the second half.

Waubonsie Valley senior Lauren Kahlenbeck appeared to score early in the second half, but the goal was took off the board on an off-sides call.

Kahlenbeck then put the ball in the net again with 26 minutes remaining for a 4-0 Waubonsie Valley advantage.

"I think they had good control," said Plainfield coach Peter Mannoja. "They took us definitely. They are a very skilled team."

Waubonsie Valley made it 5-0 when Zmijewski scored her second goal with 17:29 left. The Warriors continued attacking, and made it 6-0 when Lauren Cochran and Lauren Kahlenbeck combined for a goal to keep the onslaught progressing.

The Warriors kept the pressure on until the final buzzer went off. Sophomore Jan Herdrich scored with 4:15 remaining for a 7-0 lead, then Zmijewski added another goal for the final 8-0 margin late in the second half.

"We wanted to put some goals on them early," said Waubonsie Valley assistant coach Jenny Hyngstrom, who was filling in for head coach Julie Bergstrom.
